چکیده

We have observed high-resolution intensity spectra near the Fe i 1564.8 nm line at a single umbral point corresponding to the darkest position in over 900 sunspots from 1998 through 2005. From these data we determine that the maximum sunspot magnetic fields have been decreasing at about 52 G yr . The same data set shows a concurrent increase in the normalized umbral intensity from 0.60 to 0.75 (corresponding to a blackbody temperature rise from 5137 to 5719 K) and a decrease of more than 50% in the molecular OH line strength. The magnetic field and intensity changes observed over time in the sunspot umbrae from different spots behave in the same way as the magnetic field and intensity changes observed spatially across single sunspots. The dependence of the magnetic field strength of a sunspot umbra on its intensity and brightness temperature

A partial decrease of the convective energy by the magnetic field of a sunspot causes the temperature of the magnetized plasma to decrease and this leads to a magneto-hydrostatic equilibrium. Thus, we expect a strong relation between magnetic field strength of a sunspot and its temperature/brightness. Here, we investigate this relation in the umbra of the large sunspot in NOAA10930 using spectr...

Umbral Fine Structures in Sunspots Observed with Hinode Solar Optical Telescope

High resolution imaging observation of a sunspot umbra was done with Hinode Solar Optical Telescope (SOT). Filtergrams in wavelengths of blue and green continuum were taken during three consecutive days. The umbra consisted of a dark core region, several diffuse components and numerous umbral dots. We derived basic properties of umbral dots (UDs), especially their temperatures, lifetimes, prope...

Theoretical Models of Sunspot Structure and Dynamics

Recent progress in theoretical modeling of a sunspot is reviewed. The observed properties of umbral dots are well reproduced by realistic simulations of magnetoconvection in a vertical, monolithic magnetic field. To understand the penumbra, it is useful to distinguish between the inner penumbra, dominated by bright filaments containing slender dark cores, and the outer penumbra, made up of dark...

Results from a realistic simulation of 3D radiative magneto-convection in a strong background magnetic field corresponding to the conditions in sunspot umbrae are shown. The convective energy transport is dominated by narrow upflow plumes with adjacent downflows, which become almost field-free near the surface layers. The strong external magnetic field forces the plumes to assume a cusp-like sh...

Are Neutral Sunspot Winds Important for Penumbral Dynamics and the First Ionization Potential Effect?

The low ionization state in parts of a sunspot may play an important role in its evolution and dynamical state. The cool magnetic interior region of the sunspot develops a substantial neutral atomic and molecular hydrogen osmotic pressure which can drive a wind outward from the umbra. Ambipolar diffusion against the magnetically pinned ionized plasma component can also distort the umbral magnet...
